sBux is a new system NSFAS introduced in 2014 to pay students’ allowances for private accommodation, food, books and travel costs. Please note that UNISA students will only receive book vouchers and not all students qualify for an NSFAS allowance on top of their loan.
How does sBux work?
You can convert your loan into vouchers using your phone. You can use these vouchers to pay your landlord, buy food or book at certain stores or withdraw cash to pay for your transport. These vouchers are unique and can only be used once, so only convert the amount you need into vouchers.
How do I activate my sBux account?
- You will need to have your own cell phone and use the number that you used to register and apply on NSFAS.
- Once you sign your SOP or LAF you will receive a message from sBux (Celbux) to activate your sBux account.
- You will then need to verify your account by dialling #134*176# and reply with your ID number
- You will then receive your password to access your account and convert your loan into vouchers. DO NOT share this password with anybody! Memorise it or keep it safe. If your phone gets stolen and your password is saved on it, anyone can convert your loan into vouchers and spend the vouchers.

Where can you spend your vouchers?
There are over 2700 merchants/shops registered on sBux, the majority of them are food retailers. This includes Checkers, Shoprite and Van Schaiks Bookstore. You can find a list of stores here: http://www.sharedlist.org/shopping/sBux%20Merchants-643/?p=3
There is also an online store where you can purchase laptops and electronics. http://www.esbuxstore.co.za/market/browse.aspx
