The Amended Senior Certificate (ASC) offers adults aged 21 and older to write and obtain a Matric certificate.

To qualify for admission to the ASC you must be 21 years and older with:

  • A General Education and Training Certificate (GETC); or

  • A Grade 9 school report; or

  • A recognised equivalent qualification obtained at NQF Level 1 with a pass in 2 official languages; or

  • An incomplete Senior Certificate qualification; or

  • An incomplete Senior Certificate with School-Based Assessments that have expired.

In exceptional cases, you may also qualify to write the ASC if you are an out of school youth aged 18-21, who could not complete your school education due to circumstances out of your control. To be considered in this case you will have to provide proof of your circumstances, which the Head of Department in the Provincial Education Department will verify.

Subjects Offered as part of the ASC include:

  • Home and First Additional Language in English, Afrikaans, IsiNdebele, IsiXhosa, IsiZulu, Sepedi, Sesotho, Setswana, SiSwati, Tshivenda, Xitsonga

  • Agricultural Sciences

  • Accounting

  • Business Studies

  • Economics

  • Geography

  • History

  • Religious Studies

  • Computer Applications Technology

  • Information Technology

  • Life Sciences

  • Mathematical Literacy

  • Mathematics

  • Physical Sciences

In order to obtain the Amended Senior Certificate you must write a minimum of 6 subjects (which must include 2 official languages) and pass:

  • 3 subjects at 40%, one of which must be an official language at Home language level

  • 2 subjects at 30%, one of which must be an official language at First Additional or Home Language level

  • 1 other subject at a sub-minimum of 20%

Registration for 2018 ASC examinations closes on 31 January 2018. You can register at any Provincial Education Office or register online.

To register online:

  • Access the e-Gov Portal (www.eservices.gov.za)

  • Register using your ID and personal information

  • Use the One Time Pin (OTP) you will receive to complete your registration and then login using the username and password you created.

  • Select the e-Matric service and use the One Time Pin (OTP) you will receive to access the service

  • Register for the Senior Certificate (amended) examination

  • Once you have registered you will receive confirmation via SMS or email

  • Print the Preliminary Form

To register for the ASC you will need:

  • Completed registration form

  • A certified copy of your ID, birth certificate or passport

  • A certified copy of any Senior Certificate results you may have previously obtained

  • The examination numbers of any Grade 12 or equivalent examinations that you have previously entered and written.

  • A valid email address and cell phone number

What you need to know about ASC Examinations

ASC examinations will be written in June/July 2018.

Candidates writing ASC will be exempted from School-Based Assessments and each examination will constitute 100% of the final mark.

Previous subject credits will be recognised for candidates that:

  1. obtained Senior Certificate subject credits at a Higher Grade and Standard Grade level, prior to June 2015;

  2. obtained Business English, a Second Language and/or Sakeafrikaans at an N3 level;

  3. attempted the National Senior Certificate examinations but were unable to complete all the subject requirements and have exhausted the 3 year validity period allowed for the SBA


ASC examinations are written at designated examination centres that are determined by the Provincial Education Department (PED).
